Why would you pay for something that every person in Anchorage does for free? You could pay to hike without a guide, or you could maybe just hike without paying someone. Tough call.

This sign was at the Saturday Market the day before we did this hike. It's almost like making money while hiking! I guess I do that all summer long anyway...

Alright fine. I suppose the money goes to the shuttle, but that still seems ridiculous.

Hiking Through Ash

We drove out to the end of the Fljótshliðarvegur and started hiking along the road on the north side of the Markarfljótsaurar. After a while we decided it would be fun to hike across the ash-mud flat itself, and follow the course of the river. In some places the ash was quite deep, and it was like walking on a strange kind of snow-sand mix.
