Poetry Evening

Salisbury House Poets night, Edmonton, London.
Salisbury House Poets. Salisbury House is a lovely old house with a priest hole. This was my first experience of a poetry night. There were several readers from the floor and then Allen and Sarah read poems and - gasp - did songs! - with an interval in the kitchen for wine or coffee. A good night out.
Saturday 7th February
SARAH DOYLE and ALLEN ASHLEY
Sarah is a winner in the Ottakers/Faber & Faber poetry competition and has had poems published in Midnight Street magazine. In 2008, Sarahâs work was included in the Norfolk Poetsâ and Writersâ Anthology, and she had a villanelle commended in the prestigious Poetry on the Lake competition in Italy. Technically accomplished, though highly accessible, Sarahâs poetry uses tightly constructed rhyme schemes, metre and form to express deliberately contemporary concerns. Celebrity divorces, domestic goddesses, break-ups, make-ups and heartbreak all feature in Sarahâs wry take on modern life, that will resonate with anyone who has ever fallen to in â" or out of â" love.
Allen is best known as a science fiction and fantasy writer and editor with over 100 stories published. His books include the novel âThe Planet Suiteâ (TTA Press 1997) and, as editor, âThe Elastic Book of Numbersâ (Elastic Press, 2005). The latter scooped the prestigious British Fantasy Society Award as âBest Anthologyâ. Allenâs most recent book is âSubtle Edensâ from Elastic Press (2008), an anthology of science fiction and fantasy stories with Allen again as editor. As a poet, singer and lyricist, Allen has been widely published and has performed at venues in London, Essex and Belgium. He has also performed three times with the space rock band Hawkwind.
