How do I generate a series of numbers in SPSS with a particular standard deviation or mean?
I have economic data plotted against time and am relating it to political data. I would like to run some simulations so that I can compare findings against artificially generated data. In other words I'd like to create new series of data that is in the same range as my real data and which has the same standard deviation and/or mean. Ideally I'd like to this in SPSS or Excel. Thanks.

Not familiar with SPSS (I'm a Stata user), but here's how I'd do it in excel:
Put your mean in cell E1 and your st. Dev in cell F1
In A1, enter the following function:
=rand()
This generates a random number between 0 and 1
In B1, enter the following function
=normsinv(A1)
This interprets the value in A1 as a probability and returns the Z score associated with that probability
In C1, enter the following function:
=E1+B1*F1
This gives you a value in the same range as your real data
Highlight A1-C1 and drag the fill bar down until you have the number of observations you want.
Voila, you have a dataset in your C column that is normally distributed with the standard deviation and mean of your real data.
Before using the data you generated, you probably want to highlight all of the cells you are using in the A:C columns and do a paste special - values, so you don't paste the formulas.
