NYC - Rockefeller Center: International Building - To Commemorate the Workmen of the Center - Construction

Gaston Lachaise's To Commemorate the Workmen of the Center has adorned the entrance to the International Building at 45 Rockefeller Plaza since its installation in May, 1935. These two bas-reliefs, also known as Construction and Destruction are a tribute to labor. The south panel, Destruction, depicts two workers clearing a site--one wielding a crobar, the other an acetylene torch--represented by an old fluted column, a symbolic relic. The north panel, Construction depicts two workers riding a steal beam as it is lifted towards its ultimate destination. Both panels depict the workers as muscular, semi-dressed, heroic male figures.
French-born Gaston Lachaise's father was a prominent cabinet maker who designed the Eiffel apartment in the Eiffel Tower. A studio assistant to Paul Manship, Lachaise celebrated the human body throughout his art work. His other piece in Rockefeller Center, Gifts of Earth to Mankind, is at 1250 Avenue of the Americas.
Rockefeller Center was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1985.
In 2007, Rockefeller Center was ranked #56 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.
