Highway of Death "Kuwait Basra" 26 February 1991

The Highway of Death refers to a road between Kuwait and Basra on which civilians and minor retreating units of the Iraqi army were brutally attacked and completely destroyed by American aircrafts during the United Nations Coalition offensive in the Gulf War, on the night of February 26 - February 27, 1991.
It is known officially as Highway 80, and it runs from Kuwait City to the border towns of Abdali (Kuwait) and Safwan (Iraq), and then on to Basra. The road was repaired during the late 1990s, and was used in the initial stages of the 2003 invasion of Iraq by U.S. and British forces.

Stagecoach United Counties 116 VLT255 Oxford

United Counties 116 was one of those ''odd-ball'' vehicles , which turn up in Fleets from time to time , and make our hobby all the more interesting.
116 was new in 1993 to the Malawi operations of Stagecoach in Africa ! But by 1995 it came into the Northampton Fleet . A Leyland Tiger with a Duple Laser 2 full coch body
for 44 and a fitted toilet ! Duple Laser 2s were not all that common and this one may have been unique , within the Stagecoach Group. I also seem to remember the gear-box was strange , totally manual I believe , which may have been o k with our African bretheren , but was a bit ''old-fashioned '' in the U K .
Seen here in a pretty poor photo at Gloucester Green Coach Station in Oxford , covering a duty on what was then the X38 Northampton to Oxford Coachlinks Route. Inspite of this shot it was not used alot on regular service at Northampton , mainly used to allow Drivers to obtain a ''Manual Box Licence '' I believe , and used on Crew Ferry Work also.
Often seen around Northampton by me , but not when I had my camera with me --typical !
